After spending several weeks searching for the right inspiration among history's and literature's most celebrated romances—Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra and Mark Antony, and others—I ultimately set them aside. While timeless, none of them spoke to me personally. Instead, I found myself drawn to a far more unconventional love story.
One of my favorite romances is that of John Clayton III, Earl of Greystoke (Tarzan), and Jane Porter as portrayed in the film Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. Unlike the more fantastical portrayals that followed Edgar Rice Burroughs' original stories, Greystoke presents a deeply human and poignant tale. Returned from the African jungle to assume his role as heir to the Clayton estate, Tarzan finds himself caught between two worlds. There he meets Jane Porter, who sees beyond his untamed exterior and recognizes the thoughtful, compassionate soul within. The two fall deeply in love.
Yet theirs is not a story destined for a conventional happy ending. As time passes, Tarzan's longing for the jungle—his true home—grows overwhelming, eventually pushing him toward despair. Unable to bear the pain she sees in him, Jane makes the ultimate sacrifice: she helps him return to Africa, knowing it will mean losing him. Their love, profound and enduring, ultimately yields to a bittersweet truth—that sometimes the purest expression of love is not holding on, but letting go.

II. The Music
Rather than depicting the jungle or the adventures commonly associated with Tarzan, I chose to focus entirely on the relationship between Jane and John. Each is represented by a distinct theme, which develops and intertwines as their story unfolds.
The work concludes with a stately theme heard twice. In its first appearance, it represents John Clayton III, heir to the Greystoke estate. In its final and more expansive statement, the theme takes on a deeper meaning, representing Tarzan's true inheritance—not the estate in England, but the African jungle that has always been his home.

Perusal score
