The movements are individually based on the United States Air Force Core Values. These values, setting a common standard for conduct, were introduced in 1995 and were promulgated throughout the Air Force at every level by the Air Education and Training Command and The United States Air Force Academy. The Core Values are “Integrity First,” “Service Before Self,” and “Excellence In All We Do.”
I. Integrity Fanfare and March - “Integrity First”
Integrity, Virtue, Morality, Truthfulness, Accountability and Pride. When I thought of these words as a composer, I heard a fanfare, a processional and a march. Not all at the same time, but more of a melding of all three. A fanfare that states “We are here;” a procession that states “We are prepared;” and a march that states “Lets GO!”
II. Far from Home - “Service Before Self”
With careful consideration of the Core Value “Service Before Self,” only one word came to mind... “Sacrifice.” Certainly during day to day normal military existence there is an ongoing personal “service before self” commitment. During wartime, it is lived day by day, minute by minute. “Far From Home” finds our military men and woman afield, dreaming of home and loved ones. In measures 65-72, the oboe closely quotes the opening phrase of “America the Beautiful,” the words for which were first conceived in 1893 by Katharine Lee Bates. (Bates wrote the second version in 1904 and her final version in 1913.) Very easily, an original musical phrase could have been used in this spot, but I wanted the audience to feel a “patriotic” moment as well as mentally hear the opening words to “America the Beautiful.” The celesta in the piece represents things childlike in particular, as when a mother or father is missing their children or when a father has thoughts of that newborn whose birth he has missed. At times the piece is a folk song, and at times it is a lullaby. As a whole, it is a simple wish to be where the heart is.
III. Honor Above All - “Excellence In All We Do”
This movement is a musical portrait of the many occupations and duties in the Air Force, in peacetime and wartime. In measure 193, the movement arrives at its musical destiny, a hymn entitled “A Military Prayer.” In keeping with the programmatic theme of depicting all that the Air Force does, this section represents the most important thing they do -- defend and protect the United States of America. The prayer is a combat prayer, and the words are as follows:
“Lord, God, My Saving Grace. In Your Hands My Soul I Place,
Dear Lord, God Forgive My Sins, Please Let My Faith Not Falter
Lord, God. Please Grant Me Strength. Let Your Spirit Flow Through Mine .
Dear Lord, God. Let Wisdom Reign and Courage Guide My Journey.
Oh Lord, God. The King of Kings. Armor Born of Love Be Mine.
Dear Lord, God. When My Days End Let Heaven’s Light Shine On Me.” Julie Giroux
Measure 254 starts the final section entitled Fieramente “La Mano di Dio.” This section represents the acts of warfare and has 3 motifs going on simultaneously. The upper woodwinds (12/8 pulse) are the “Integrity,” the horns and saxophones (4/4 pulse) are the “Service Before Self,” and the trumpets and trombones (3 against 4 triplet pulse) are the “Excellence In All We Do.” The final phrase is a bold tribute to the men and women, past and present, who have been a part of the United States Air Force. It is important to resist the temptation to crescendo in measure 252 leading into this final section. The measure should be played mezzo-forte with a subito unleashed forte at measure 253.

SCORE PREVIEW (PDF)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0693/1031/6784/files/GM1029_NoFinerCallingSCOREANDPARTSCoverart.jpg?v=1732506802
evening-snow-at-kambara-from-bookmarks-from-japan-symphony-no-2
Bookmarks from Japan - (Sym. Hiroshige died before the entire collection was completed. Hiroshige II fnished it. The frst prints were published in order between 1856 and 1859. Originally built in 941 AD, Kaminarimon is the outer gate leading to the Senso-ji Temple which was constructed around 628 AD near Kamagata and later relocated to its present location in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan in 1635. This large gate features four statues. The Shinto gods Fujin and Raijin are located on the front of the gate and the Buddhist god Tenryu and goddess Kinryu stand on the reverse side. Fujin, displayed on the front east side of the gate, is the god of wind and Raijin, on the west side, is the god of thunder, giving the gate its nickname of “Thunder Gate.” Displayed in the middle of the gate is a giant red chochin (lantern) which weighs approximately 1,500 pounds. Despite its huge size, it is very fragile. The front of the lantern bears the painting of the gate’s name Kaminarimon, and the painting on the back reads Furaijinmon, the ofcial name of the gate. The bottom or base of the chochin displays a beautiful wooden carving of a dragon. Over the centuries the gate has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. The current gate dates to 1960 and the new lantern was donated in 2003. As a tourist, you cannot get close to the statues as they are protected by fences and wire and you certainly cannot touch them. His series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” is Hokusai’s most famous work. Looking at this stunning print, you can see Mount Fuji in the background. However, the central focus is an enormous wave called an okinami (wave of the open sea), peaked and curling with several Japanese boats in different stages of entering the perilous wave.In this work, a single wave is depicted from its beginnings far out in the sparkling, sun-drenched seas all the way through its final throes onto a rocky beach. The piece starts in the open sea, fairly calm with sunlight refracting into thousands of tiny points of light. Depicting this are the woodwinds rippling up and down with sixteenth triplet variations. The trombones and French horns enter the mix with a solid melodic statement. The trumpets are added near the end of the phrase, all of which depicts the first shaping of the great wave. This entire section peaks in measure 38 where we get the full rolling motion throughout the entire band. Just looking at the score, you can see the melodic lines and phrases going up and down the staves. From measures 40 to 45 the music winds down, ending with only two instruments playing. This signifies the separation of the wave from the open sea as it begins its final path towards landfall. Measure 45 to the end is its journey, growing in strength and volume to the final moments of this great wave.

SCORE PREVIEW (PDF)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0693/1031/6784/files/GM1077_IIIGreatWaveoffKanagawaBookmarksfromJapanScoreANDPartsCoverart.jpg?v=1732507909
nihonbashi-from-bookmarks-from-japan-symphony-no-2
Bookmarks from Japan - (Sym. The Nihonbashi bridge was the central point of development of what is now a business district of Chuo, Tokyo, Japan, aptly named the Nihonbashi District. For centuries it thrived as a mercantile district. The frst department store ever developed in Japan was by the Mitsui family named Mitsukoshi. From its early days as a fsh market to the current fnancial district of Tokyo (and Japan), this bridge spanning the Nihonbashi River is a true landmark in Tokyo. In fact, highway signs that state the distance to Tokyo actually state the distance to the Nihonbashi bridge. Up until shortly before 1964, you could see Mount Fuji from the bridge. However, the 1964 Summer Olympics put in a raised expressway over the Nihonbashi bridge, obscuring the view of Mount Fuji entirely. Fuji covered in mist and low clouds which slowly burn of as the day progresses. Orchestration and composition techniques follow this scenario starting of with mysterious, unfocused scoring. As the piece progresses, the scoring gets more focused and bold with the fnal statement representing Fuji-san in totally clear view.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0693/1031/6784/files/GM1081_BookmarksfromJapanCompleteSetALLPartsandScoresCoverart_73daf7f0-de16-4f79-9dbc-e451d6570016.jpg?v=1732551411
a-symphony-of-fables
A Symphony of Fables - (Sym. Taking to heart the often spoken phrase “write what you know about,” I decided after great debate to compose all the fables in what I consider to be “old school” style. What I mean by that is I used styles which I believe I would have heard as “background” music in my head or at the movies when I was young. Keep in mind that when I was a child, my favorite musical story compilation was Disney’s “Fantasia.” I knew I did not want this work to come off as “cartoon” music, but as an emotionally serious and highly programmatic work with several options for the performers in its “telling”. Each movement has been composed to stand alone and is capable of being performed in that matter with no introduction other than the usual program notes as a guide. Any combination of the movements in the same manner is also perfectly acceptable. The published “order” is what I feel to be the best if the entire work is being performed. But again, I will leave that to the performers. I have provided short narrations of each fable, which can be read to the audience before each movement. In addition or in lieu of verbally reading to the audience each fable, I have put in the score text which could be described as “story hints.” This text can be given to the audience in variety of ways. The simplest being the words printed out on poster board large enough for the entire audience to see and raised at the appropriate moments (there is a “Story Line” part included in musical notation as to exactly where these text boards should be shown to the audience). I know it sounds simplistic, but it is very effective. ii. An overhead projector or video format could be used for the same purpose or could show story boards/pictures from an actual fable book instead. The variety of visual props is endless. I like the idea of only using pictures because it would remind the audience of days gone by when they could not read the words of a story and could only look at the pictures. One comment I have along these lines is that I would not recommend actually speaking these words or any others during the performance of any of these movements. A Symphony of Fables was not composed with musical gaps or dynamic considerations for spoken text. I believe that type of presenta-tion is possible, but would require some adjustments on the part of the performers. I will leave all these decisions to you.
