On the last day of the tour, the shadows fell across the doorway and left me with a heavy heart. As an american we are fond of saying things like \"see you later\" as a good-bye. For the most part, I knew parting from my new friends was more of a \"see you never again\" type of fare thee well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eComposing Shadow Falls was therapy, giving me a chance to express my feelings of joy and sadness with every note. Giroux captures the activity and busyness of the Carvanal with a persistent rhythmic motor that travels through various timbres of the ensemble including many Latin percussion instruments. The A section of the piece serves as an introduction to some of the motives or main characters. Utilizing vibrant orchestration and styling, each motive evokes images of brightly colored dancers dressed in lavish costumes. As the parade continues, the listener hears the characters interact with one another and the excitement builds as the tonal center starts to wander. The B section becomes more homorhythmic and harmonious as if the crowd and the performers join together in singing. Attentions suddenly divert as the next group of dancers come through, interjecting quick flashes of color, forming the development section. The development leads into a contrasting C section that has a free and majestic texture, possibly illustrating the passing by of an enormous parade float. Familiar motives from the beginning return with slight variations followed by a brief coda. As the music accelerates, the rush of excitement and energy overloads the senses and brings the piece to a close.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCarnaval! was premiered by the University of North Texas Symphonic Band conducted by Dennis W. I am not going to describe exactly what I was imagining because they are my own demons and by leaving that detail out of the program notes, I hope to encourage the audience and listeners to imagine their own demons. Now, thanks to Paula, there is hope on the other side of that wall; there is an ending to this work which leaves us alive and safe from peril. She was right. The piece is better with this ending. J.G. \u003cbr\u003eNotes to the Conductor \u003cbr\u003eIn measures 81 - 146 and 162 - end the percussion should sound highly ethnic in nature. If you have an extra percussionist, then split the maraca and tambourine part and use two players. If you don’t have the players to do so and you don’t have a percussionist who can play both instruments at the same time, the gong part may be omitted. I do not want the bass drum to actually sound like as bass drum. I am looking for a deeper, less identifiable sound, like a huge skin drum. I have suggested a very hard mallet played close to the center of the drum, with the drum turned almost parallel to the floor. I want to hear the attack, but also want to hear it ring afterwards unless otherwise marked. The sleigh bells can be replaced with a tambourine, antique cymbal stick, or possibly another like instrument. The gong is to be played with a wood snare stick (not a mallet), close to the center of the gong during those sections. The tom-toms should be played with a very hard mallet. I suggest using the specific instrumentation already listed until the players know their parts - then you may experiment with optional\/alternate sounds\/instruments. The ultimate goal is to have those sections sound very ethnic, full and colorful in nature. The bass drum part is the most important. In all, Hiroshige produced 55 prints for the series “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Highway.” Fifty-three of the prints represent the 53 post stations along the way. The additional two prints are of the starting and ending points. The post stations ofered food, lodging and stables for travelers of the Tokaido Highway. “Evening Snow at Kambara” was the 15th station Hiroshige visited.A song in structure, this piece sings of the soft and slow process of spiritual healing whose soft touch is not unlike that of falling snow. The piece starts with solo piano, harp and alto fute. The melody is simple, yet haunting, and grows with the slow addition of players. The piece ends with the same three soloists it began with. I arranged it to reflect that, so the piece changes from 4\/4 to 3\/4 at will. It is a free-flowing arrangement with many ways to interpret it regarding ritards and so on. I did this arrangement harmonically my way because I knew Wade would expect nothing less. All my love to Wade and his family. This is Hiroshige’s “Leaving Edo : Nihonbashi”, “the bridge of Japan” and is number 1\/55 in the series of prints. The Nihonbashi bridge was the central point of development of what is now a business district of Chuo, Tokyo, Japan, aptly named the Nihonbashi District. For centuries it thrived as a mercantile district. The frst department store ever developed in Japan was by the Mitsui family named Mitsukoshi. From its early days as a fsh market to the current fnancial district of Tokyo (and Japan), this bridge spanning the Nihonbashi River is a true landmark in Tokyo. In fact, highway signs that state the distance to Tokyo actually state the distance to the Nihonbashi bridge. Up until shortly before 1964, you could see Mount Fuji from the bridge. However, the 1964 Summer Olympics put in a raised expressway over the Nihonbashi bridge, obscuring the view of Mount Fuji entirely. I knew there were 3 huge obstacles I would be faced with: I had to change the key, yikes, and I had to face those two chord inversions with Puccini’s specific voicings\/spellings; a trademark of this aria which also happens to be two of the worst possible voicings for wind bands. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn the first pass, I scored as closely as I could to Puccini's, using every trick in my book to make it work. It felt like trying to hide a grand piano behind a lizard. The second time, I thought, nobody will notice this change and shifted the voicing ever so slightly \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewhich I immediately noticed. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe third time, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“let me cheat and voice it for winds, I mean, who is going to notice that? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(I noticed immediately) The fourth time was full blown desecration. \"Mi scusi Puccini. With his highly disciplined and effective army, Khan conquered more territory than any other conqueror creating an empire which continued to expand even after his death  becoming the largest contiguous empire in history. Though many of his campaigns were in conquest of territory and riches, just as many were often a matter of retaliation.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e   His non-military feats included the introduction of a writing system which is still used in Inner Mongolia today (Uighur script), an empire and society which stressed religious tolerance and the Mongol nation which would not exist today if not for his campaigns.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eNotes to the Conductor\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e   In places the percussion - gong, bass drum \u0026amp; taiko drum (the opening in particular), are to be played loud just like you were in a palace introducing the entrance of Genghis Khan. The bundle sticks part  used throughout the piece is meant to sound different in each section it is heard. The time to change sounds is marked in the part with a suggested change, like on the rim, on the snare with snare off, ect. But that is by no means engraved in stone. The particulars are left to you as a way to creatively enhance each passage in whatever way you see fit. When it’s a soft passage, a higher sound and a loose setting on the bundle sticks will tend to sound better  and a lower and tighter adjustment will sound better in the loud or warmer sections. Then ending section is marked normal snare with normal sticks and that will probably be best but again, I will leave the final decision to you.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e      Adjustments will always be necessary depending on the size of the band and the number of percussion players and instruments at your disposal.\u003cbr\u003e      The percussion plays an integral part throughout KHAN but only during the \"Warlord\" theme should it be bombastic. In the first 3 measures the percussion can indeed be nearly as loud as they can play.  Other than that, the percussion  should always be heard or felt but never over power or bury the band.\u003cbr\u003eThe gong part calls for one gong however, if you have a Chinese or small ceremonial gong and players at your disposal, 2 gongs playing the identical part would be a nice addition. The piano solo depicts the silence of not just the family, but of nature and the world itself, like one giant entity holding its breath in a moment of respect and awe waiting to experience the sunrise. Measure 33 starts the first rays of light and grows into the full glory of day with measure 43. This theme is the sun's theme. Daytime doesn't last long and fades out into measure 54, which begins the wind down of the day. The lullaby from 58 to 68 represents children falling asleep and exhausted parents doing likewise. Loss is never easy but when loved ones are taken before their time the loss and grief seem to be compounded. This hymn is for them. My prayers will always include them. This hymn is for the survivors as well. My hope is that this music, this hymn can be a part of a healing process for some listener out there. Express yourself and let the performers know they need to bring a pencil to all rehearsals and that even on the performance to watch you because again, you may do something different than you did before. You have to let it take control of your emotions and your soul and experience the journey AS the music, not just with it. As musicians when we play music, we are gifting the listeners with not just the music but our souls. And as that vessel we must be willing to lose a part of ourselves in the giving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen composing you must be willing to leave a part of yourself in the music and on the page. There can be no walls, no hesitations.  When you are finished with whatever it is you have just written, if you feel protective of the notes, the music, have a need to keep it from harm, a need to know that whoever you hand it to will care for it and help it be what it was meant to be, then you know what you have written was worth putting on the paper. Five billion years from now as the collision starts, there will be no humans on earth to see the extraordinary light show that will go on for thousands of years because our sun will be so much stronger by then on its nova journey, the surface of the Earth will be burned to a crisp. Some scientists think Mars may be far enough away. I look at it like this. All we have to do is a little planet hopping over the next 4 billion years and we won't have to travel too terribly far to find a new home because an entire galaxy is going to pay us a visit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCelestial Seas opens up with humans represented by 3 notes which make up a 6 note melody. Those three notes are the building blocks for the entire work which takes us from now to the collision of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies and beyond. If you have 3 bassoons and no contrabassoon, put at least 1 player on the contra part playing the lowest transposing down an octave at all times when it is possible.*\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Tenor Drum is to be a high pitched tenor drum, either a snare with the snare o(, a timbale that isn't too aggressive or a small tenor drum like instrument. It is to be played with snare sticks at all times. At many times during the orchestration it answers the snare. The volume of the two instruments including \"presence\" should be the same. The Tenor drum should never be louder than the snare. The Tom-Tom should also be played with snare sticks to avoid over ring\/low overtones as much as possible. If the Bass Drum is marked staccato it is to be very short\/dampened. IF the staccato section does not involve a roll, use sticks instead of bass drum mallets again with the purpose of excessive over ring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDYNAMICS are crucial.\u003cbr\u003eCrescendos, decrescendos, instant drops or increases of dynamics should all be easily recognized. Short really means SHORT. Long really means LONG. If the woodwinds run across an articulation that makes a passage harder than it needs to be, change it. This is not a shrine. It is a living breathing creation. You and your band members give it life. Changing small things like articulations will not make a di(erence to the listener. This piece is expressive but it is also very aggressive. The sections involving musical \u0026amp; emotional discourse especially in the more contemporary sounding areas should ALL be exciting and suspenseful with extra attention to dynamics and articulations. Again, short is really short, long is really long and crescendos going from mp to F are huge and should be performed accordingly!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFF is not marked many places but if you feel an F to be a FF then by all means play FF. I encourage all conductors to make the music their own and express it accordingly. That is after all, what makes conducting an art form. The opening melody and every other time it occurs is to be legato and passionate. The half tone dissonances between the melody and the accompaniment should always be brought out. As one who composes strictly from the heart, it is impossible not to reflect on my experiences with death, loss, and acceptance. I will admit, I never accept it. I am just stuck in the sorrow and loss, never moving to whatever the next phase is. That leaves me with only being able to compose the “life” aspect, which is probably for the best. Rain Softly on Me is that celebration of life -- good and bad -- with the only acceptance being the knowledge that, yes, someday, we all die. We celebrate life continuously with love. Love for all life, for the experiences, good and bad, and also the knowledge that the journey on Earth one day ends. It is the acceptance of that knowledge that is best approached with love. Rain Softly on Me reflects on that wondrous journey and the love that defines it. In measure 38, the raindrops become no longer random, but musically part of each chord in passing. The whole opening section represents a light, random rain. The middle section of “Rain” features 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon and piano. It is a representation of the melancholy that comes with rain. The music then builds into a huge downpour, represented by the movement’s main theme. Measures 91 to 125 represent such a wind beginning with, again, the magic “twinkling” of melodic percussion. Jazzy woodwinds are added to the “twinkling” magic with fluid solos in the Alto Saxophone, Clarinet 1 and French Horn representing a perfect breeze playing across bare flesh. Poseidon is often compared or combined with the Roman god of the sea, Neptune.
