It is the second most popular tree growing beside Irish holy wells and on the Isle of Man, ash trees were said to protect the purity of springs. It is also the most common tree in England.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis particular reimagining of The Ash Grove introduces several thematic motifs inspired by the original melody. While this work is full of hemiolas and time signature changes, the beat stays constant. Many of the hemiola-filled sections are so long, it could have been scored 3\/4 time for some players while at the same time also being scored in 6\/8 time for others. Since the different meters following these sections depended on one time signature over the other for a smooth transition, it is easier to read as long hemiolas. Playful and full of folly, this Ash Grove setting does not focus on the almost always mournful lyrics, but on the Ash Grove itself - a place of mystery, magic, renewal, myth and happiness.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEric Hammer loved the idea of this setting and was happy about its origins being centered on trees. I was torn on staying with the original ideas we discussed or writing something completely different after Eric left this world. Large cities, villages, forts, ancient ruins, caves, lone houses, sawmills and abandoned shacks dot the atlas. One can spend hours just walking or riding horseback from one side of the continent to the other doing nothing but experiencing its wondrous environment and lore. It is truly a game worthy of total immersion. Oh, and I should mention that it is also a deadly world, torn apart by civil war and dragons who have resurfaced after thousands of years, not to mention the cult of vampires that are also threatening to take over the world.\u003cbr\u003eRiften is a seedy, crime-filled and nearly lawless city. Located on a waterfront with skooma-addicted dock workers and corrupt guards, it also boasts the headquarters of the Thieve’s Guild. Sadly enough, it is also the location for the worlds orphanage and the Temple of Mara, the place where the good citizens of Skyrim have to go to get married, you included.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWeddings in Skyrim are about survival as much as fondness or imagined love. Courtship can be as simple a dialogue as “Are you interested in me? Why yes, are you interested in me? Yes. It’s settled then.” Sometimes the dialogue is more along the lines of “You are smart and strong. I would be lucky to have you. I would walk the path of life beside you ‘til the end of time if you will have me.” Although this game feels somewhat like the iron age with magic and dragons, it has a progressive, flourishing society.\u003cbr\u003eIn Skyrim, if so desired, your spouse can and will fight beside you. They will die for you or with you. For most of them, that death is permanent. You cannot remarry (not without cheating anyway). What was is over and there will be no other. Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I found the whole situation intriguing and heart wrenching especially if related or injected into real world circumstances. In one instance while playing the game, I emerged from the chapel with my brand new husband only to have him killed later that evening in a vicious full-on vampire attack right outside the temple. (Hey! No fair! I knew I should have married a warrior and not a merchant. I restarted the game.) Skyrim weddings are happening in the middle of a world full of violence, disease, war and death. Something Earth is all too familiar with.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Riften Wed” is the music for loves and unions, past and present such as this. A love, a wedding, a lifetime shared by two people in the middle of a storm that threatens to tear them apart. Where “‘til death do us part” is not only a reality, it’s a given. Where love is a gift worthy of all the joy and pain it demands. One life, one love, one ending. Giroux captures the activity and busyness of the Carvanal with a persistent rhythmic motor that travels through various timbres of the ensemble including many Latin percussion instruments. The A section of the piece serves as an introduction to some of the motives or main characters. Utilizing vibrant orchestration and styling, each motive evokes images of brightly colored dancers dressed in lavish costumes. As the parade continues, the listener hears the characters interact with one another and the excitement builds as the tonal center starts to wander. The B section becomes more homorhythmic and harmonious as if the crowd and the performers join together in singing. Attentions suddenly divert as the next group of dancers come through, interjecting quick flashes of color, forming the development section. The development leads into a contrasting C section that has a free and majestic texture, possibly illustrating the passing by of an enormous parade float. Familiar motives from the beginning return with slight variations followed by a brief coda. As the music accelerates, the rush of excitement and energy overloads the senses and brings the piece to a close.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCarnaval! was premiered by the University of North Texas Symphonic Band conducted by Dennis W. I am not going to describe exactly what I was imagining because they are my own demons and by leaving that detail out of the program notes, I hope to encourage the audience and listeners to imagine their own demons. She wanted there to be hope on the other side of that wall, at the end. I deleted my ending which was dark, short and captured an untimely death. Now, thanks to Paula, there is hope on the other side of that wall; there is an ending to this work which leaves us alive and safe from peril. She was right. The piece is better with this ending. Tempos should fluctuate a little as the piece swells and wanes. The dance section should be highly energetic and extremely light. When you see a staccato, I mean it. Not clipped off and harsh, but short and light as you would find in a ballet. Be aware of the contributions of the percussion at all times as they are the driving force of the piece - but they should never be overwhelming or over-obvious. If you have an extra percussionist, then split the maraca and tambourine part and use two players. If you don’t have the players to do so and you don’t have a percussionist who can play both instruments at the same time, the gong part may be omitted. I do not want the bass drum to actually sound like as bass drum. I am looking for a deeper, less identifiable sound, like a huge skin drum. I have suggested a very hard mallet played close to the center of the drum, with the drum turned almost parallel to the floor. I want to hear the attack, but also want to hear it ring afterwards unless otherwise marked. The sleigh bells can be replaced with a tambourine, antique cymbal stick, or possibly another like instrument. The gong is to be played with a wood snare stick (not a mallet), close to the center of the gong during those sections. The tom-toms should be played with a very hard mallet. I suggest using the specific instrumentation already listed until the players know their parts - then you may experiment with optional\/alternate sounds\/instruments. The ultimate goal is to have those sections sound very ethnic, full and colorful in nature. The bass drum part is the most important. The drifting I did on that highway in the game mostly sent me sailing of the road, fying through air and ultimately landing in a fery, end-over-end wipeout. And as with any search on the internet, Youtube ofered up a seemingly endless supply of videos featuring not one, but long parades of cars in single fle drifting on the Tokaido Highway as it runs through Hakone.THE MUSICSubtitled “Drifting,” this piece refects my love of fast cars doing crazy, fun things. The Core Values are “Integrity First,” “Service Before Self,” and “Excellence In All We Do.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eI. Integrity Fanfare and March\u003c\/strong\u003e - “Integrity First”\u003cbr\u003eIntegrity, Virtue, Morality, Truthfulness, Accountability and Pride. When I thought of these words as a composer, I heard a fanfare, a processional and a march. Not all at the same time, but more of a melding of all three. A fanfare that states “We are here;” a procession that states “We are prepared;” and a march that states “Lets GO!”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eII. Far from Home\u003c\/strong\u003e - “Service Before Self”\u003cbr\u003eWith careful consideration of the Core Value “Service Before Self,” only one word came to mind... “Sacrifice.” Certainly during day to day normal military existence there is an ongoing personal “service before self” commitment. During wartime, it is lived day by day, minute by minute. “Far From Home” finds our military men and woman afield, dreaming of home and loved ones. In measures 65-72, the oboe closely quotes the opening phrase of “America the Beautiful,” the words for which were first conceived in 1893 by Katharine Lee Bates. (Bates wrote the second version in 1904 and her final version in 1913.) Very easily, an original musical phrase could have been used in this spot, but I wanted the audience to feel a “patriotic” moment as well as mentally hear the opening words to “America the Beautiful.” The celesta in the piece represents things childlike in particular, as when a mother or father is missing their children or when a father has thoughts of that newborn whose birth he has missed. At times the piece is a folk song, and at times it is a lullaby. As a whole, it is a simple wish to be where the heart is.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIII. The ofcial party he was traveling with was transporting horses which were gifts to be ofered to the imperial court. The journey greatly inspired Hiroshige for he sketched many of its scenes during his journey’s round trip. In all, Hiroshige produced 55 prints for the series “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Highway.” Fifty-three of the prints represent the 53 post stations along the way. The additional two prints are of the starting and ending points. The post stations ofered food, lodging and stables for travelers of the Tokaido Highway. “Evening Snow at Kambara” was the 15th station Hiroshige visited.A song in structure, this piece sings of the soft and slow process of spiritual healing whose soft touch is not unlike that of falling snow. The piece starts with solo piano, harp and alto fute. The melody is simple, yet haunting, and grows with the slow addition of players. The piece ends with the same three soloists it began with. Hiroshige died before the entire collection was completed. Hiroshige II fnished it. The frst prints were published in order between 1856 and 1859. Originally built in 941 AD, Kaminarimon is the outer gate leading to the Senso-ji Temple which was constructed around 628 AD near Kamagata and later relocated to its present location in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan in 1635. This large gate features four statues. The Shinto gods Fujin and Raijin are located on the front of the gate and the Buddhist god Tenryu and goddess Kinryu stand on the reverse side. Fujin, displayed on the front east side of the gate, is the god of wind and Raijin, on the west side, is the god of thunder, giving the gate its nickname of “Thunder Gate.” Displayed in the middle of the gate is a giant red chochin (lantern) which weighs approximately 1,500 pounds. Despite its huge size, it is very fragile. The front of the lantern bears the painting of the gate’s name Kaminarimon, and the painting on the back reads Furaijinmon, the ofcial name of the gate. The bottom or base of the chochin displays a beautiful wooden carving of a dragon. Over the centuries the gate has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. The current gate dates to 1960 and the new lantern was donated in 2003. As a tourist, you cannot get close to the statues as they are protected by fences and wire and you certainly cannot touch them. Above the 8000-meter altitude is the boundary known as the “death zone” which includes the top 611 meters of K2. However, the central focus is an enormous wave called an okinami (wave of the open sea), peaked and curling with several Japanese boats in different stages of entering the perilous wave.In this work, a single wave is depicted from its beginnings far out in the sparkling, sun-drenched seas all the way through its final throes onto a rocky beach. The piece starts in the open sea, fairly calm with sunlight refracting into thousands of tiny points of light. Depicting this are the woodwinds rippling up and down with sixteenth triplet variations. The trombones and French horns enter the mix with a solid melodic statement. The trumpets are added near the end of the phrase, all of which depicts the first shaping of the great wave. This entire section peaks in measure 38 where we get the full rolling motion throughout the entire band. Just looking at the score, you can see the melodic lines and phrases going up and down the staves. From measures 40 to 45 the music winds down, ending with only two instruments playing. This signifies the separation of the wave from the open sea as it begins its final path towards landfall. The exotic calls of the birds and the echoes from other birds of the same species, the insects, the frogs and the rain; you can practi-cally feel and smell the rain. It is very much like music, the music of nature, of Earth. The density of growth with every shade of green is the backdrop for this beautiful, strange opera. I knew I wanted to write music to it. I composed Voices in Green with the Amazon jungle sounds playing as a backdrop while I composed. It influences every note and phrase. In my mind and heart, I was there, adding my voice to theirs. Voices in Green can be performed strictly on its own. Kafka was to return to prague before his death, but not before buying his young friend another doll. The doll described that yes, she looked different, but on her long trip, the doll had seen many wonderful things, had gone through many life changing experiences. All of those travels had transformed the little doll. Not only on the inside, but on the outside as well. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe little girl embraced the doll, happy with tears. Kafka and her parted, never to see each other again. I have always wanted to tell their story with music. As I imagined them both meeting in Stadtpark Steglitz, which is a romantic garden memorial that is located in Berlin's southern district. I imagined their friendship and their walks through the park. I imagined they would have heard the bells of the Berlin Cathedral, which has existed in several different forms since the 15th century. Those bells gave me the musical vehicle I needed to start and end the work with; the music I imagined they both heard. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTo the Bells of Berlin Cathedral has several very personal facets to it. It is the first music I have composed after the death of my mother. This music may not have been specifically written for her, but there is no putting a wall up between my feelings of loss and my artistic expressions. It just can't be done. Another facet is, I told this story to my good friend, Bruce Leek. He loved it and it brought tears to his eyes as well as mine. He may have been a little gruff on the outside, but he wasn't on the inside. That was also to be my last conversation with Bruce before he died. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor several months, I could not compose at all. Translated as \"None shall sleep,\" the song conveys the prince's conviction that Turandot will fail. He will tell her his name when morning comes, before their first kiss. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI think every composer comes across that one piece of music that they unconditionally love forever, that end all be all, that which is beyond reproach. This aria is one of those for me. I knew there were 3 huge obstacles I would be faced with: I had to change the key, yikes, and I had to face those two chord inversions with Puccini’s specific voicings\/spellings; a trademark of this aria which also happens to be two of the worst possible voicings for wind bands. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn the first pass, I scored as closely as I could to Puccini's, using every trick in my book to make it work. It felt like trying to hide a grand piano behind a lizard. The second time, I thought, nobody will notice this change and shifted the voicing ever so slightly \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewhich I immediately noticed. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe third time, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“let me cheat and voice it for winds, I mean, who is going to notice that? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(I noticed immediately) The fourth time was full blown desecration. \"Mi scusi Puccini. Non sono che un\u003cbr\u003econtadino!\" (Please excuse me Puccini. I am but a peasant!\")\u003cbr\u003e\"Nessun Dorma\" translates in the aria as \"None shall sleep\" and trust me, I didn’t. Those chord spellings will haunt me to the end of my days. It became my white whale. The music of the middle section moves between different soloists in a playful manner reminding us that springs can bring us peace during times of stress or sorrow. The piece ends just as it arrived, with a calming, reflective tone. Most of the work is at a brisk tempo combined with energetic rhythms and driving percussion which continuously propel the music urgently forward. Extreme dynamic contrasts throughout the piece contribute to the emotional turbulence. Genghis Khan and his army ended the lives of thousands of people and his \"Warlord\" theme with great force, ends this work. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e                         Genghis Khan (1165-1227)\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e   Genghis Khan (more properly known as Chinggis Khan) was one of history’s most brutal, charismatic and successful warlords. He was a strategic genius. With his highly disciplined and effective army, Khan conquered more territory than any other conqueror creating an empire which continued to expand even after his death  becoming the largest contiguous empire in history. Though many of his campaigns were in conquest of territory and riches, just as many were often a matter of retaliation.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e   His non-military feats included the introduction of a writing system which is still used in Inner Mongolia today (Uighur script), an empire and society which stressed religious tolerance and the Mongol nation which would not exist today if not for his campaigns.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eNotes to the Conductor\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e   In places the percussion - gong, bass drum \u0026amp; taiko drum (the opening in particular), are to be played loud just like you were in a palace introducing the entrance of Genghis Khan. The bundle sticks part  used throughout the piece is meant to sound different in each section it is heard. The time to change sounds is marked in the part with a suggested change, like on the rim, on the snare with snare off, ect. But that is by no means engraved in stone. The particulars are left to you as a way to creatively enhance each passage in whatever way you see fit. When it’s a soft passage, a higher sound and a loose setting on the bundle sticks will tend to sound better  and a lower and tighter adjustment will sound better in the loud or warmer sections. Then ending section is marked normal snare with normal sticks and that will probably be best but again, I will leave the final decision to you.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e      Adjustments will always be necessary depending on the size of the band and the number of percussion players and instruments at your disposal.\u003cbr\u003e      The percussion plays an integral part throughout KHAN but only during the \"Warlord\" theme should it be bombastic. In the first 3 measures the percussion can indeed be nearly as loud as they can play.  Other than that, the percussion  should always be heard or felt but never over power or bury the band.\u003cbr\u003eThe gong part calls for one gong however, if you have a Chinese or small ceremonial gong and players at your disposal, 2 gongs playing the identical part would be a nice addition.
